Lenexa Mayor Michael Boehm will not run for reelection in November after serving in the role since 2003.

After two decades, Lenexa’s longest-serving mayor announced Tuesday that he will not seek another term in November.

Mayor Michael Boehm was first appointed to lead the city in January 2003, when he was elected to serve the last three months of Mayor Joan Bowman’s term as she stepped away due to health concerns.

He was elected in April 2003 and won four subsequent unopposed elections.

In 2022, the League of Kansas Municipalities presented Boehm with the E.A. Mosher Excellence in Local Government Award, which honors officials who have shown exceptional service to their cities and the league as well as a strong commitment to local government.

Boehm previously represented Ward 4 on the Lenexa City Council from 1995 to 2003 and served on the Lenexa Planning Commission from 1991 to 1994.

During his tenure in Lenexa government, the city received numerous awards and AAA ratings.

Boehm has also helped oversee the adoption of the city’s Vision 2020, Vision 2030 and now Vision 2040 plans. The Vision 2030 plan included the adoption of body cameras for police in 2009 and the opening of a Youth Police Academy in 2008.

His time also included the implementation of a 10-year plan to designate future parks and trails and improvements to area facilities, the opening of a new civic campus and farmer’s market, the approval of the Climate Action Playbook created by Climate Action KC with recommendations to reduce pollution and the groundbreaking for a $73 million justice center set to open in 2024.

A lifelong Lenexa resident, Boehm works with various community organizations, including the Johnson County Community College Foundation Board Executive Committee, the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Mid-America Regional Council Board of Directors, the Lenexa Chamber of Commerce and the Lenexa Historical Society.

He is also a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the League of Kansas Municipalities Board of Directors, where he served as president from 2005 to 2006.

Outside of his role in local government, Boehm is the vice president of Commerce Bank. He has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Kansas.
