Man critically injured when fire engulfs a home in the Brookside area of Kansas City
A man was critically injured when a fire engulfed a home early Friday in the Brookside area of Kansas City, a fire department spokesman said.
Neighbors called 911 shortly before 5:15 a.m. after seeing smoke and flames coming from the home in the 5900 block of Locust Street, said Jason Spreitzer, a spokesman for the Kansas City Fire Department.
Arriving fire crews reported seeing smoke and fire showing from the house. Firefighters made quick entry to the home and found a man on the floor. They rescued him from the home and an ambulance took him to a hospital. The man was in critical condition after suffering burns and smoke inhalation, Spreitzer said.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but the home was a total loss, he said.
Fire investigators with the Kansas City Fire Department, along with members of the Kansas City Police Department’s bomb and arson unit, are investigating the cause and origin of the fire. Bomb and arson investigators are brought in as standard protocol whenever there is an injury in a fire, Spreitzer said.
No one else was injured in the fire. Spreitzer praised the neighbors who reported the fire.
“The neighbors are the ones who called it in — it made a difference,” he said. “I would encourage everyone to call 911 if they see something.”
The fire department also provides free smoke detectors to those who need them. For information, call the Smoke Detector line at 816-513-4648 or visit the fire department’s website.
