Driver killed, child hospitalized after rollover highway crash in south Kansas City
One person was killed and a child was taken to the hospital following a highway crash involving three vehicles in south Kansas City, according to police.
The crash occurred on 71 Highway near Bannister Road around 4 p.m. Wednesday. The fatal crash, the 79th in Kansas City so far in 2022, backed up northbound traffic on Wednesday afternoon as that part of the highway was shut down for roughly two and a half hours.
Crash investigators found that a Chevrolet SUV was traveling in the far-right lane at a high rate of speed during heavy traffic and side-swiped a GMC Yukon in the middle lane. The driver of the Chevy then rear-ended a silver Jaguar, also in the middle lane, according to police.
The impact of the crash caused the Chevy SUV to roll over and its driver was ejected from the vehicle, police said.
The driver was pronounced dead at the crash site. A juvenile strapped into a car seat in the back was taken to the hospital and last listed in stable condition, police said.
The occupants of the other two involved vehicles declined emergency medical treatment, police said.
Kansas City police continued to investigate the crash as of Wednesday night.
