Want to be one of the first inside KCI’s new terminal? You may get to help test it out

Kansas City International Airport is getting a major facelift, and it seems like everyone is eager to get to use the airport’s new single terminal.

Some lucky Kansas Citians will have the first shot at checking out the new space. Build KCI announced earlier this week that it is seeking volunteers to test out the new terminal before it opens in March.

The volunteer event will take place in mid-February, and although volunteers won’t actually be traveling, they will be asked to test out every aspect of the traveling and accommodation systems in place in the airport’s new terminal.

Construction on the new Kansas City International Airport continues and is about 90 percent complete. The airport is slated to open in March of 2023 and feature 39 gates. Above is part of concourse A.

Prospective volunteers need to fill out an application to be considered. Not every person who submits an application will be selected to test out the terminal, since the airport expects to have a large volume of applicants.

The application asks for contact information and information about traveling habits, physical mobility and dietary needs and restrictions. Those who are selected will spend a few hours at KCI testing out the terminal and then will be asked to fill out a survey to share their feedback before leaving the airport.

In addition to the volunteer opportunity, multiple airlines have announced that they will be offering flights that will depart from the new terminal in 2023. Sun Country Airlines will add a nonstop service from Kansas City to Minneapolis starting May 29, 2023. Sun Country will also be the first new airline to service KCI’s new terminal, according to a statement from KCI.

Airlines like Southwest, will also be increasing daily departures from KCI soon after the airport’s new terminal opens in March. People can expect more frequent flights from Southwest as soon as April.

The airline will be adding up to six new daily departures in April and two more in June for a total of 67 daily Southwest departures, according to Southwest spokesperson Dan Landson.

“As Kansas City International Airport’s largest carrier, Southwest looks forward to serving our Customers and the community from the new KCI terminal in 2023,” Landson said in an email statement.
