A driver is dead after losing control of a vehicle early Thursday and crashing in a Kansas City Papa John’s parking lot, according to police.

Officers responded just before 4 a.m. to the one-vehicle collision at the Papa John’s in the 1300 block of Westport Road, said Capt. Leslie Foreman, a spokeswoman with the Kansas City Police Department.

The driver of the black Nissan Altima was traveling east on Westport Road at a high speed when he lost control and went off the roadway to the left, Foreman said.

The vehicle jumped the curb and struck a large pole in the Papa John’s parking lot.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.
