Driver injured after losing control, crashing into concrete wall along Kansas City highway

A driver was critically injured early Wednesday after losing control of a silver Nissan Altima and crashing into a concrete wall along Bruce R. Watkins Drive, a police spokesman said.

The wreck occurred shortly after midnight on the parkway which is also known as U.S. 71 highway, according to Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

The car was headed south when the driver lost control. The car struck the center median and then veered across all of the southbound lanes and crashed into the concrete wall on the right side of the highway. The car came to rest on the entrance ramp from 39th Street to southbound Bruce R. Watkins Drive, Becchina said.

The driver, who was the only person in the car at the time of the crash, was taken to a hospital with critical injuries suffered in the crash and was in stable condition, Becchina said.

All southbound lanes of Bruce R. Watkins Drive were closed for about two hours while police investigated the crash.
