Kansas City area firefighter dies in crash while off duty

An off-duty Independence firefighter died in a crash last week, the city announced over the weekend.

Fire equipment operator Harold “Gene” Eddins died after being involved in the wreck on Friday, the city said on social media.

Eddins joined the Independence Fire Department in October 2010 as a firefighter/paramedic. During his 12 years with the department, he served as fire inspector and was promoted to equipment operator in 2020. His public safety career spanned more than 30 years.

Details of the crash were not immediately available. Funeral arrangements have not been released.
