A driver was injured Thursday after crashing into a Shawnee, Kansas fire station, officials said.

Just after midnight, a car woke fire crews at the John B. Glaser Fire Station on Quivira Road when it crashed through the bay doors and hit a ladder truck, said Deputy Chief Corey Sands, a spokesman for the Shawnee Fire Department.

Firefighters believe the driver was having a medical emergency, Sands said. A crew inside the station and another that was returning from a call rendered medical aid before the driver was taken to a hospital.

The driver was in serious condition, but there were no injuries to firefighters, he said.

There was extensive damage to the truck, which Sands said will be out of service until it is repaired. A reserve ladder truck was put in place, so there won’t be delays in service for residents, he said.

Shawnee police are investigating the incident.
