Discarded smoking materials were the cause of a structure fire Sunday in Lee’s Summit after the back of a home caught fire, according to officials.

The Lee’s Summit Fire Department responded at 11:25 p.m. to the 400 block of Southeast Youngston Lane to fight a fire in a two-story, single-family residence, said Assistant Chief Jim Eden in a news release.

Everyone in the house was safe outside when crews arrived, Eden said.

The fire started on the deck, after smoking material was discarded in a flower pot, and spread up the side of the home into the attic of the one-story addition, Eden said. Firefighters contained the blaze by 11:52 p.m., he said.

The blaze was contained to the one-story addition’s deck, siding and attic, with minor smoke damage to other portions of the home, Eden said. It was able to be reoccupied after the fire was contained.
