Driver dies after losing control on shoulder, crashing at merge on I-49 in Belton

A driver died Wednesday after losing control of a pickup truck while passing other traffic on the shoulder at a merge and crashing on Interstate 49 in Belton, police said in a Facebook post.

The single-vehicle fatal wreck occurred shortly after 11:20 a.m. Wednesday along southbound I-49 just south of 155th Street, police said.

The driver of a 2006 Dodge Dakota passed a “commercial vehicle” on the left shoulder of the highway after the interstate dropped from three to two lanes. The driver lost control of the pickup and it ran off the right side of the highway, police said.

The pickup overturned as it left the road, ejecting the driver. Emergency medical workers took the driver to a hospital. The driver later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver’s identity was not being released until family could be notified.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Belton police at 816-331-1500.
