Eastbound I-70 in Kansas City, Kansas, reopens after construction truck hit highway sign

Update: Kansas Highway Patrol said the highway reopened around 8:30 a.m. after the truck was removed.

Eastbound Interstate 70 is closed in Kansas City, Kansas, through the morning’s rush hour after a construction truck hit an overhead sign, raising fears that it might collapse, a Kansas Highway Patrol dispatcher said Wednesday.

The truck hit the sign about 3:40 a.m. along I-70 just near the exit to James Street in Kansas City, Kansas. The truck has not been removed from the scene because of concerns the sign would likely collapse, the dispatcher said.

No one was injured in the crash. Crews with the Kansas Department of Transportation were expected to secure or take down the sign before the truck was moved. It was estimated that the highway would remain close until 10 a.m.

In the meantime, traffic was being diverted along eastbound Interstate 670.
