A pedestrian died Friday morning after being struck by multiple vehicles on Interstate 70 in Kansas City, according to police.

Officers responded to calls about at least two cars hitting a pedestrian at 3 a.m. near I-70 and Interstate 435, said Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

Police said a Kia Sorento traveling east on I-70 had pulled over to the right shoulder of the road when a passenger of the vehicle got sick. The driver rolled down the window for the passenger, but for unknown reasons, the passenger decided to climb out the window and onto the roadway.

While the passenger was standing in the road, they were hit by multiple vehicles. The first car that hit the person did not stop and police were unable to identify it.

The second car that hit the victim, a Buick Enclave, stopped.

The incident marked the 65th traffic death in Kansas City this year. There were 57 such deaths by this time in 2021, police said.
