The Kansas City Star is launching a new drone video series called ‘ZIP by ZIP’. This weekly series will show you one interesting place from an aerial perspective. Our goal is to show you a landmark, attraction or historical site from a new perspective. With almost 8,500 square miles in the Kansas City metro that spans a state line and two major rivers, we have a lot of ground to cover with our drones.
66203 Merriam Marketplace
In the heart of downtown Merriam is a 3-acre plot that is home to the Merriam Marketplace, a 10,000 square-foot, covered area that is used for events, including a weekly farmers market.
It’s also an access point to the Turkey Creek Streamway Trail and to Werner Park.
Completed in 2001, the pavilion is also home to Flags 4 Freedom, check out the video here, a motorcycle and car show and many other special events.
An installation called “Planting the Seeds” from Colorado artist Christopher Weed dominates the grassy area just east of the covered pavilion. It is part of a public art program sponsored by Merriam. The round spheres reach a height of 21 feet, and are reminiscent of the “Cloud Gate” or “The Bean” in downtown Chicago.
