A pedestrian died after being struck by two cars Sunday morning on a Kansas City highway, according to police.

Officers responded at 5:53 a.m. to the area of 43rd Street and southbound 71 Highway, said Capt. Leslie Foreman, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City Police Department, in a news release.

The pedestrian ran in front of a southbound white Nissan Altima after being on the west side of the southbound lanes of the highway. The Altima was unable to stop or swerve and hit the pedestrian, Foreman said.

A black Nissan Rogue, which was directly behind the Altima, also struck the pedestrian, Foreman said.

Both drivers stopped and stayed at the scene, she said.

Emergency medical crews pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.

The incident was the 59th road fatality in Kansas City this year, compared to 48 deaths last year, according to police.
