Students were outside Wyandotte High School, 2501 Minnesota Ave., Friday after the building was locked down following a report of a weapon on campus.

One student was arrested and another was detained at Wyandotte High School Friday morning after a student brought a gun to school, officials said.

No one was injured.

Edwin Birch, a spokesman for Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools, said that around 11 a.m., administrators at the school were informed that a student had brought a gun. Administrators relayed that message to the campus police.

Police then located the student inside the school’s cafeteria. The student, however, ran away and out of the school building, Birch said.

The student was caught a short time later near the campus. Another student has been detained as part of the investigation.

The school went into lockdown for about 40 minutes. Parents were allowed to check students out of class.

Birch said the school district is investigating how the student was able to get a gun into the school building. The school has metal detectors at the main entrance that all students must pass through. The school district does not have a clear bag policy.

This was the first week back to school for Kansas City, Kansas public schools.

The school, at 2501 Minnesota Ave., has 1,676 students, according to usnews.com.

Soon after the incident was reported, Tyrone Garner, the mayor and CEO of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County, posted a message to Facebook with an image of a gun and the word “enough.”

“Speaks for itself,” Garner wrote.

Birch said the school distric’s crisis intervention team would be available for both students and staff at the school Monday in case they would like to talk about the incident.
