Kansas City Zoo announces birth of two red panda babies. Here’s how you can see them
Two new furry faces have joined the family at the Kansas City Zoo.
The red panda cubs, born on May 23, made their official appearance Wednesday on the zoo’s social media pages.
The babies are named Zhúzi, which means “bamboo” in Chinese, and Sundara, which means “beautiful” in Nepalese, according to the zoo. These are the first cubs for their mom, Kashmir, though their dad, Randy, has other children.
When they were born, the cubs weighed barely more than 100 grams, zoo officials said.
While visitors might be eager to see the new cubs, they won’t get an up-close look of them just yet in the main habitat. Instead, an animal cam in front of the habitat allows visitor to watch the small family spend time together as the cubs grow bigger and stronger.
Red pandas, native to Myanmar and China, are currently endangered.
The Kansas City Zoo is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, a breeding program working toward the survival of species with shrinking populations, like the red panda.
