Firefighters rescue woman, child from blaze that destroys Overland Park apartments

Firefighters rescued a woman, child and a dog from a window after a fire engulfed their Overland Park apartment building overnight, a fire department official said.

One firefighter was injured battling the two-alarm blaze that started shortly before midnight Thursday at the Broadmoor Court Apartments in the 6600 block of West 83rd Street, said Shayn Hurst, risk manager for the Overland Park Fire Department in a news release.

The firefighter was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition, Hurst said.

Firefighters from the Overland Park Fire Department and Johnson County Consolidated Fire District No. 2 responded to the blaze along with Johnson County Med-Act. While en route, firefighters were told there were people possibly trapped inside.

The first crews on the scene reported heavy smoke coming from one of the buildings in the apartment complex. Firefighters rescued the woman, child and dog from a window while other fire crews attacked the fire, Hurst said.

When the fire burned through the roof, commanders pulled all firefighters from the building and shifted to a defensive attack, pouring streams of water on the blaze using ladder trucks and ground lines.

It took firefighters more than two hours to bring the blaze under control. The building is likely a total loss, Hurst said.

All occupants were accounted for. The fire displaced 15 people from eight apartments in the building. The American Red Cross was helping 11 people with lodging. One dog perished in the fire, Hurst said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
