A pedestrian was critically injured after a pickup truck struck them on a highway Tuesday morning in Kansas City, according to police.

Officers responded to the scene just after 5 a.m. when a brown Ford F350 traveling westbound on Blue Parkway struck a pedestrian in the far-left lane, Officer Donna Drake, a spokeswoman with the Kansas City Police Department, said in a news release. The collision happened at 8500 Blue Parkway.

The driver told officers they did not see the pedestrian walking on the left side of the road until it was too late, Drake said. The left side and left front of the truck hit the pedestrian, knocking them into the grassy median.

The pedestrian was transported to a hospital with critical injuries. The driver of the Ford was not injured.
