I-70 reopens after crash involving overturned car snarls Kansas City rush hour traffic

A crash involving an overturned vehicle forced westbound Interstate 70 to close at 23rd Street in the Jackson Curve, snarling rush hour traffic into downtown Kansas City Friday morning.

The highway closed about 7:30 a.m., according to Kansas City Scout, the bi-state traffic management system in the metro area. Traffic cameras showed a vehicle upside down resting its roof under the 23rd Street bridge.

While the highway was closed, commuters headed into downtown Kansas City were being diverted around the crash using the exit and entrance ramps at 23rd Street. The crash snarled traffic, leading to bumper-to-bumper traffic along I-70 that stretched from 23rd to 31st streets.

The Missouri Department of Transportation had urged drivers to seek alternative routes.

Information on possible injuries was not immediately available.

The crash was cleared and the highway reopened around 9:15 a.m., the Missouri Department of Transportation said on Twitter.
