The University of Kansas chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity has been indefinitely suspended from campus, the Sigma Chi International Fraternity said.

The chapter was suspended because of accountability issues among its members, according to the statement from Sigma Chi headquarters. The national organization said KU members’ actions were inconsistent with the fraternity’s values.

“It’s disappointing when our members’ actions necessitate a chapter closure, but this was the right thing for us to do,” said international Sigma Chi president Tim Sanderson.

The University Daily Kansan, KU’s student newspaper, reported Tuesday that the issues center around hazing and lying to the national organization.

Current undergraduate members will be unable to participate in any kind of Sigma Chi events and have been moved to active suspended status, according to the national organization.

Sigma Chi is the third fraternity to be kicked off KU’s campus in 2022. Phi Gamma Delta and Phi Delta Theta were removed from campus until spring of 2027 because of a culture of hazing, The Star previously reported.

Sigma Chi plans to eventually return to KU’s campus, but the national organization said there is no timeline for doing so.

Fraternities are commonly suspended for a period of four to five years so all current members graduate before the chapter is reinstated.

Sigma Chi has undergraduate chapters at 230 colleges and universities, and has more than 355,000 all-time members, according to the national organization.
