A man died Tuesday after being hospitalized with injuries that came from a single-vehicle crash near the interchange between Interstate 435 and 71 Highway in south Kansas City, according to police.

Officers were called in response to the crash around 2:30 p.m. and found a driver who lost control of his Ford F-150 pickup truck while traveling on the exit ramp from I-435, police said. The driver was taking the exit toward the northbound lanes of U.S. 71.

The driver was alert and speaking with officers at the scene, police said. His injuries were initially believed to be non-life-threatening, police said, but he fell into critical condition Tuesday night and died.

Investigators found that the pickup truck was traveling at a high rate of speed when joining with U.S. 71 from the I-435 exit ramp. The driver left the roadway on the east side of the highway, over-corrected, returned to the roadway and the vehicle rolled over, police said.

Police did not disclose the identity of the driver Tuesday night.
