Kansas City cheese company recalls eight products after potential exposure to bacteria
A Kansas City cheese company voluntarily issued a recall for several of its products because of potential exposure to harmful bacteria, the FDA announced Thursday.
Paris Brothers, Inc. issued recalls for eight varieties of cheese produced from May 4 to May 6. The products were potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can cause listeriosis.
No illnesses associated with the recall have been reported, the FDA said.
The following products are included in the recall:
• Cottonwood River Cheddar
• D’amir Brie Double Crème French Brie
• Milton Prairie Breeze White Cheddar Style
• Milton Tomato Garlic Cheddar
• Paris Brothers Mild Cheddar
• Paris Brothers Colby Jack
• Paris Brothers Pepper Jack
• Cervasi Pecorino Romano
Shipping cartons with the affected product are labeled with lot codes 05042022, 05052022, or 05062022, but individual retail outlets may have relabeled individual packages.
The products were sent to grocery stores in Kansas and Missouri, as well as Arkansas, Iowa, Oklahoma, Nebraska and South Dakota. One store in Mississippi and one store in Florida also received shipments.
Listeria infections are most common in babies, people who are pregnant, people over 65 and those who have a weakened immune system, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Healthy adults typically experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, headache, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. About 1,600 people contract listeriosis each year.
The infection is most harmful for fetuses or newborn babies and pregnant women, the CDC says. For people over 65 or those with a weakened immune system, listeriosis can lead to sepsis or meningitis in severe cases.
The FDA encourages anyone who purchased a recalled product to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
