Horse who survived crash in 2020 in Franklin County, Missouri, available for adoption
It’s been a long road for a horse named Journey.
The 21-year-old mare was one of 29 involved in a large trailer truck crash almost two years ago. The horses were on their way to be slaughtered.
But Journey survived the crash and is now up for adoption, according to a news release from Longmeadow Rescue Ranch.
On Oct. 18, 2020, the Missouri Emergency Response Service’s Large Animal Rescue group and Franklin County officials responded to a crash on Interstate 44, about 50 miles west of St. Louis.
Ten of the 29 horses in the trailer survived. The others died in the crash or were euthanized shortly after.
Journey had minimal injuries, but she was underweight and had an abscess in her right front hoof.
Staff at Longmeadow helped treat the abscess and Journey has gained about 200 pounds since she arrived at the rescue.
A month after the crash, while undergoing a routine check, staff discovered Journey was pregnant. She gave birth in August 2021 to a colt named Cruiser.
With Cruiser now weaned, Journey is available for adoption. Cruiser is looking for a sponsor through Longmeadow’s Barn Buddy program, the news release said.
