Kansas City Zoo donates to Ukraine Zoos Emergency Fund. Here’s how you can help too
The Kansas City Zoo is donating money to help support zoos in Ukraine care for their animals and staff — and it is encouraging the Kansas City community to help in the effort as well, the zoo announced Wednesday.
The zoo said it will donate $5,000 from its Conservation Emergency Response Funds to help address struggles that Ukrainian zoos may be facing.
“Like many, the staff of the Kansas City Zoo have seen and heard heartbreaking stories of the challenges faced by the people of Ukraine,” the zoo said in a news release. “As fellow animal care professionals, we are also particularly concerned for the animals at zoological facilities being impacted by the situation there.”
The zoo is asking members of the Kansas City community to donate to help have a bigger impact. All of the money raised will be donated to the Ukraine Zoos Emergency Fund being administrated by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria.
People looking to contribute can make online donations at http://www.kansascityzoo.org/ukraine.
The fund will provide food and care to the animals as well as provide support for the care staff and management at the zoos. The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria is in direct contact with the Myikolayiv Zoo, Kharkiv Zoo and Kyiv Zoo, and indirect contact with other zoos via the Ukrainian Zoo Association.
The source of the zoo’s initial gift is coming from its Conservation Fund, which raises money through a portion of admission and membership sales, programs in retail shops and concessions, education programs and events and private donations.
