Have you seen too many accidents on Interstate 70? Or are you sick of being stuck in traffic on the highway? With your input, some of that could change.

The Missouri Department of Transportation is working to improve infrastructure along I-70, with a focus between The Paseo and U.S. 40. They want to hear from residents about what kinds of improvements should be prioritized.

WHAT’S BEING CHANGED?

MoDOT is planning changes that will ideally improve safety and accessibility and lower the congestion along I-70.

These proposed changes will cost around $140 million and are divided into four segments.

Segment 1:

  • 14th Street will be separated from westbound and eastbound ramp access.

  • They’ll reconnect 14th Street with Garfield and Wabash Avenues.

Segment 2:

  • They’ll modify the westbound entrance ramp at Benton Boulevard and 23rd Street.

  • I-70’s alignment between Chestnut Avenue and 23rd Street will be modified.

  • Askew Avenue and 24th Street will be reconnected.

Segment 3:

  • They’ll change the alignment for I-70 through the Jackson Avenue curve.

  • Entrance and exit ramps going eastbound at 27th Street will be modified.

  • The eastbound exit ramp to Myrtle Avenue will be taken out.

  • Jackson Avenue’s eastbound entrance and exit ramps will be modified.

  • Spruce Avenue and Myrtle Avenue will be reconnected by MoDOT.

  • MoDOT will add a connection to Myrtle Avenue and Norton Avenue.

Segment 4:

  • Van Brunt Boulevard’s westbound entrance ramp will be modified

HOW CAN I GIVE FEEDBACK?

You’ll need to go to this website Then, drag the “submit a comment” icon at the top of the website and place it where you want to on the map. You’ll then fill out the comment box with what you want to say and fill in the required fields, such as your email and ZIP code.

You can leave your name and attach a photo. Here are a few examples of comments residents have made:

“Will the lighting poles on 70 remain on the outside of the interstate or be moved to the center concrete barrier like on Bruce R. Watkins?”

“Add a 200 foot merge lane here, it is extremely dangerous trying to go directly into the #3 lane without any clear vision of the highway as the Jackson Curve is higher than the on-ramp. Many accidents and slowdowns happen due to this dangerous area.”

“I agree that additional lanes encourage sprawl and you can’t build your way out of congestion. Therefore please consider smart highways and traffic management. Ramp meters would be beneficial. Look at the new I-25 ramp metering system in Denver that was brought over from technology in Melbourne, Australia.”

You have until March 31 to leave a comment on the website.
