The Country Club Plaza bunnies are back, starting Monday, March 28 until April 26.

This Easter tradition has transformed the Plaza for 91 years. This year, the oversized bunnies and eight other animals will be on full display to help Kansas Citians ring in the spring season.

The bunnies, named Amy, Bess, Ellyn, Kate, Sue, Brian, Lee, Peter and Nicolas, are the stars of this annual installation, but who first created them and who they are named after remains a mystery, according to a report by The Star.

They first appeared in 1922 in the Crestwood Shoppes just south of the Plaza, and by 1931 they made their way to the Plaza.

“They came at a time when the Depression was happening and the J.C. Nichols Company was trying to raise spirits and keep the community feeling good and keep them out,” former Plaza marketing director Gayle Terry told The Star in 2017.

Today, the bunnies and the eight other wonderland friends, continue to spark joy for many residents during this time of year. For some it’s a hallmark tradition that marks the beginning of spring or a reminder of their childhood. For others, the bead- eyed statues can be a bit creepy.

Whether they bring you joy or cause you angst, the bunnies will be back on the Plaza soon. To see where they will be, check out this map.
