Eastbound I-70 in KCK reopens hours after fatal crash; one westbound lane open
Hours after a deadly crash Friday morning, authorities have slowly started reopening Interstate 70 in Kansas City, Kansas.
Eastbound lanes of the highway reopened around noon Friday and police opened one westbound lane later in the afternoon.
The inside lane of westbound I-70 near the area of Interstate 435, just east of the Legends Outlets in Wyandotte County, is open, Nancy Chartrand, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department, said in an email around 2:30 p.m.
The center and outside lane are still closed for debris removal and police are asking drivers to reduce their speed in that area and to watch out for emergency and highway workers still on the scene.
Police said the deadly crash occurred around 7:30 a.m. Friday when two semi trucks heading west on I-70 collided. The crash caused a fire, sending plumes of heavy smoke into the air.
One person was confirmed dead.
Police are asking motorists to drive carefully as roads may be slick due to rain that has moved in across the metro area.
