‘I’ve been shot’: Audio captures moments after shooting at Olathe East High School

“Shots fired” came the call from the school resource officer at Olathe East High School Friday morning, according to scanner traffic captured by Broadcastify.com.

“472, I’ve been shot,” the officer advised dispatchers shortly after 10:30 a.m.

“Shots fired on Olathe,” the dispatcher said in response. “472, what’s your location?”

“472, I’ve been shot,” the officer replied. “It’s at the principal’s office.”

The audio captured the moments after gunfire erupted in the school of roughly 2,000 students. A school administrator as well as the suspect — a high school student — were injured.

Shortly after an emergency tone went out and dispatchers advised that an officer needed assistance at the school, the injured officer reported back.

“472, I have applied a tourniquet on myself,” the officer said.

“472, I copy,” the dispatcher said. “Is the suspect at large?”

“The suspect I believe has been shot,” the dispatcher said. “The principal has been shot.”

The call for help drew responses from across Johnson County with police departments sending officers to the school at 14545 West 127th Street to help.

As the officers were advising dispatchers they were responding to the shooting, the wounded officer, who was breathing heavily, provided an update to dispatchers.

“472, we got two people confirmed . . . three people confirmed shot, including myself,” the officer told dispatchers.

“472, is that three people shot?” a dispatcher asked.

“10-4. Myself, an assistant principal and the suspect,” the officer replied.

“10-4. The suspect still have the firearm?” the dispatcher asked.

“Firearm secured,” the officer said.

“I copy 472,” the dispatcher said. “We got a lot of help headed that way.”

The school was placed on lockdown until the scene was secured. The district made arrangements for students to be reunited with their families at California Trail Middle School. Buses from the Pioneer Trail Middle School were also arranged to transport students home.

Both the injured school administrator and the school resource officer are expected to survive, Olathe police spokesman Sgt. Joel Yeldell said in a briefing Friday.

The officer was doing “fine” and was talking with people at the hospital, Yeldell said.

The administrator was in stable condition.

The student’s condition was unclear.
