March’s First Friday has the weather on its side. Check out what’s happening across KC
What a difference a month makes. There was snow on the ground at the start of February, and temperatures broke 80 degrees in the first days of March.
The warm weather makes it perfect to journey down to either the Crossroads or the West Bottoms for First Friday. Here’s what you need to know about what each location has in store for this weekend.
CROSSROADS
You’ll find local, regional, national and international artists displaying their work across the Crossroads this March.
Opening at 5 p.m. Friday at The Bunker Center for the Arts is Linda Jurkiewicz’s solo exhibit “DO NOT SILENCE ME: Exploring Women’s Roles Through Stitch.” Each piece in her exhibit uses repurposed materials like dish towels, sheets and clothing as she explores the cultural customs that were placed on women.
At Border Brewing Company, you become the DJ for emo night. You’ll have to download the Rockbot app to request and vote for your favorite mid-2000s emo classics. They’ll have fresh craft beers on deck and outside food from sites like Parlor and Pirate’s Bone Burgers are welcome.
The 12th annual Expressions Art exhibit also takes place Friday. From 6 to 9 p.m. at Rochester Brewing and Roasting Company, you can see a showcase from artists with disabilities, celebrating their abilities. They’ll host a virtual tour live on Facebook when it opens.
WHEN TO GO
Most exhibits are open from 5 to 9 p.m., while some will open and close early. You can find each gallery’s hours here. The food, drink and entertainment options will vary per location. Check here to find out when businesses open.
WHERE TO PARK
If you’re looking for free street parking, arriving early is your best chance. While there are many parking free and metered parking options in the Crossroads and downtown Kansas City, First Fridays are busy.
Using public transit like the Kansas City Streetcar is encouraged. The 16th Street and the 19th Street stops will put you right in the middle of the Crossroads.
HISTORIC WEST BOTTOMS
Bookworms will feel right at home in the Historic West Bottoms, as March’s theme is “The Books in the Bottoms.” Stores will feature books and unique bookcases for decoration and for sale throughout the weekend.
The reading chair you’ve been dreaming about along with the book you’ve been looking for could be waiting for you this weekend. If you’re looking for decorative pieces to fill out your reading nook, Bella Patina and Serendipity have the antiques you need
“I love decorating with books, reading, collecting books and absorbing history, so, we pivoted our Books in the Bottoms this year to feature the passion for antique books and the aesthetics of books,” Amber Arnett-Bequeaith, West Bottoms district spokesperson said in a statement. “Plus, the stores’ designers display and arrange books with a style that is a treat for the eye and the mind.”
In addition to that, Java Garage has quadrupled their space on 13th and Hickory St. It’ll give customers more space to read their new book and enjoy their crafted coffee and tea.
The Historic West Bottoms also offers Full Moon Escape, an escape room for groups of 11 or less to challenge their minds and find their way out in less than 60 minutes.
WHEN TO GO
First Friday weekend runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
WHERE TO PARK
Free street parking in the West Bottoms is typically extremely limited during First Friday weekends. City parking lots cost $10 for the day and may require a short walk. Here’s a map of the neighborhood parking lots.
