Light snow falling in the Kansas City area; Road conditions could become slick

Light snow began falling in the Kansas City area early Thursday causing a few slick spots on area highways, roads and parking lots during the morning commute.

Kansas City metro offices of the Kansas Department of Transportation urged people to drive safely when they headed out on the morning commute.

“OK folks. Cold temps, light snow expected today,” KDOT said on Twitter. “You know the drill.”

It urged drivers to check kandrive.org for road conditions and then to buckle up and slow down.

The Missouri Department of Transportation’s Kansas City District said that roads across the metro were mostly clear, however drivers should use caution when heading out.

Meanwhile, the Missouri Department of Transportation reported that a lot of highways south of Interstate 70 across the state were covered with snow.

“AVOID TRAVELING if you can, as these conditions will likely be sticking around or worsening through the evening rush hour,” MoDOT said on Twitter.

The Missouri Highway Patrol urged in a message on Twitter for drivers to slow down, increase following distance and to use caution.

“Regardless of accumulation amounts in your area — even small amounts of winter precipitation can create hazardous driving conditions,” the highway patrol said.

In the immediate Kansas City area, widespread light snow with minor accumulations were expected. Most areas will likely see between a dusting and an inch of snow, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.

Below freezing temperatures were expected through Saturday morning, climbing into the mid-20s on Thursday and the upper 20s to low 30s on Friday. Overnight temperatures were expected to be in the single digits and teens. Wind chills will make it feel more like zero degrees, according to the weather service.
