Spring-like temperatures coming to end in Kansas City; possible winter storm brewing

Kansas City’s stretch of spring-like weather will be coming to an end soon as a blast of frigid air will send temperatures plunging, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.

There’s still time, however, to enjoy the unseasonably warm conditions.

Temperatures in the Kansas City area are expected to climb back into the upper 40s and 50s on Thursday and upper 40s to near 60 degrees on Friday, according to the weather service.

Those temperature ranges are more typical of what Kansas City sees in March. The normal maximum temperature for this time of year is 42 degrees.

Light rain will be possible Friday morning, mainly east of Interstate 29 and Interstate 49 in Missouri as a cold front passes through the area.

As the cold front departs, much colder air will move in and send temperatures tumbling. Lows Friday night will plunge into the lower teens to lower 20s. The wind, however, will make it feel much colder. Wind chill values will fall into the single digits — maybe as low as a few degrees below zero in some areas, according to the weather service.

The cold air will make for a chilly weekend, with highs near 30 degrees on Saturday and near 40 degrees on Sunday. The cold won’t last long as temperatures are expected to climb into the 40s to lower 50s on Monday and the mid-50s to mid-60s on Tuesday.

A storm system that is brewing might bring winter weather by the middle of the week, the weather service said. Rain is possible on Wednesday, which could transition into to snow overnight as a cold front moves through the area.

“This system will bear watching through the next several days,” the weather service said.
