Two women in their 70s were identified as the drivers killed in a head-on collision Monday caused by a SUV going the wrong way in the southbound lanes of Interstate 49, according to a preliminary crash report from the Missouri Highway Patrol.

The drivers were identified as 73-year-old Janna L. Dillon of Clinton and 77-year-old Sandra C. Hammond of Belton. The 51-year-old driver of a third vehicle involved in the crash was not injured.

The crash occurred about 1:10 p.m. near the Missouri 291 and I-49 interchange, according to the crash report.

Hammond, who was driving a maroon 2005 Toyota SUV took the wrong ramp from Missouri 29 and drove north in the southbound lanes of I-49. She collided head-on with a silver 2022 Chevrolet SUV driven by Dillon.

Both drivers were killed on impact, said Sgt. Andy Bell, a spokesman for the highway patrol. The crash remains under investigation.

Southbound I-49 remained closed for several hours while authorities investigated the crash. The highway reopened shortly after 4:30 p.m.
