Trash pickup across Kansas City is halted for the rest of the week as city crews are rerouted to prepare for the oncoming winter storm.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Kansas City and the surrounding region beginning Tuesday evening and lasting late into Thursday. The snowstorm could dump foot or more of snow across the metro Wednesday. Freezing rain is also a concern. Drivers are urged to stay home if they can.

This means that instead of doing trash pickup rounds, more than 200 city employees have been enlisted to start prepping and pre-treating Kansas City roads beginning Tuesday ahead of the evening storm, according to a city news release.

This Tuesday through Friday delay includes all trash and recycling pickup, as well as appointments made to pick up bulky items.

Next week, when trash pickup returns Monday, Kansas City residents can put up to four trash bags on the curb.

To help snowplows navigate the roads, the city is asking that residents park off-street if they can. If that’s not possible, they are asked to park on either the north or west sides of their neighborhood streets.

“Parking cars on only one side of residential streets will help plows clear your streets faster and more completely,” according to a release from the city.

The city ahead of the winter storm also announced that city offices will be closed for in-person meetings on Wednesday and Thursday, with staff working remotely. City Council will also meet virtually this week.
