Driver dies after crashing into pillar of railroad bridge in Kansas City

Update: The driver of the Lincoln Aviator who crashed into a concrete pillar to a railroad bridge has died from his injuries, a police spokeswoman said Friday. This is the first traffic fatality of the year in Kansas City. The name of the victim was not released.

A driver was critically injured in a crash with a concrete pillar to a railroad bridge Thursday evening in Kansas City, a police spokeswoman said.

Police responded to the crash about 6:10 p.m. at a railroad bridge that spans Truman Road near Askew Avenue, said Capt. Leslie Foreman with the Kansas City Police Department.

A preliminary investigation found that the driver was headed east on Truman in a Lincoln Aviator when they struck the pillar. The driver was seriously injured in the crash and was taken to a hospital. The driver was listed in critical condition, Foreman said.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash. Investigators are looking into whether impairment was involved in the crash, she said.
