First delivery of 700 tons of rail arrives for extension of Kansas City Streetcar

Trucks will start the delivery of around 700 tons of rail Tuesday for KC Streetcar’s Main Street extension, the KC Streetcar Authority announced.

The first truck arrived mid-morning and continue for two weeks. The rail is being stored near 27th and Main streets, where it will be welded into 400-foot sections.

Four trucks a day will deliver the rail, for a total of 36 deliveries, the authority said in a news release. Welding will begin once all of the rail has been delivered.

The first delivery of rails for the KC Streetcar Main Street Extension were delivered to the construction site at 27th and Main streets where workers guided the rails onto wood beams as they were unloaded on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022, in Kansas City. Over a four-week period, 458 sticks of rails, each 80 feet long and weighing 3,100 pounds, will be delivered for the construction of the streetcar extension which will take about two-and-a-half years.

During delivery and welding, traffic on Main will be temporarily reduced. Also, Grand Boulevard, between Main and Warwick Trafficway, in the Crown Center area will be closed.

Both Main and Grand will reopen once the welding is completed.

The delivery consists of 458 sticks of 115# T rail, with each rail being 80 feet long and weighing 3,100 pounds. The rail for the main street extension comes from Pueblo, Colorado, and recently has been stored at a facility in Kansas City.

Although construction on Main has been ongoing for more than a year, official groundbreaking for the extension will occur at the beginning of this year. Construction is expected to take 2 1/2 years and begin carrying passengers in 2025.

The $351 million project will extend the KC Streetcar 3.5 miles from Union Station to the University of Missouri—Kansas City at 51st Street and Brookside Boulevard. It is funded with federal Capital Investment Grant funds and a Transportation Development District.

KC Streetcar Constructors, a joint venture between Herzog Contracting Corp. and Stacy and Witbeck, and supported by Burns & McDonnell and JE Dunn Construction, is leading the construction project.

It is overseen by a joint partnership between Kansas City, the KC Streetcar Authority and the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority.
