The North Kansas City School District on Sunday night canceled classes for Monday, citing hazardous road conditions.

In a statement, the district said students are not required to participate in virtual learning, but that optional “enrichment activities” will be available online.

“Evening activity cancellations will be handled on a case-by-case basis,” the district said. “This additional day will allow for further clearing of side streets and roads to allow for safe travel to school on Tuesday morning.”

In a Twitter post, Superintendent Daniel Clemens, who had been watching road conditions, said salt products on the district’s parking lots had “not broken through the ice.”

“Our crews continue to work, but are not having much success,” Clemens wrote. “Temps won’t improve the current state.”

Temperatures were expected to remain below 20 degrees overnight in the region.
