Early-morning hit-and-run Sunday leaves 2 people injured; 1 in critical condition
An early-morning hit-and-run crash left two people with serious and critical injuries on Sunday.
Kansas City police around 3 a.m. on Sunday responded to a two-vehicle crash near 39th Street and the northbound ramp to U.S. 71 Highway.
Police said that a silver Ford Focus was traveling east on 39th street when a driver in a white Cadillac Escalade, traveling north on the U.S. 71 ramp, failed to stop at a red traffic light. The Cadillac collided with the Ford, the impact of which caused both vehicles to flip onto their sides.
The four occupants of the overturned Cadillac fled the scene in an unknown direction, according to Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman with the Kansas City Police Department.
There were six people in the Ford: two in the front, two in the back seats and then two in the rear cargo area, which had no seats or safety features.
The woman in the front passenger seat suffered serious injuries, according to police, and a male passenger in the rear had injuries described as critical.
Police said they were investigating whether the driver of the Ford may have been impaired.
Any potential injuries of the men from the Cadillac who fled the scene were unknown.
