Man critically injured when run over while trying to remove bowling ball in front of car
A woman drove over her husband twice as he tried to dislodge a bowling ball thrown in front of their car on Saturday.
The incident occurred at about 3:06 p.m. , according to Donna Drake, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City police department. The man was transported to the hospital with critical injuries as officers arrived at the scene of the collision to investigate.
Later in the day, a suspect walked into the East Patrol station and admitted to throwing the bowling ball in front of a moving car on 31st street.
The couple had been driving west on East 31st Street and Montgall Avenue at the time of the incident, police said.
While driving the car, the woman, 25, rolled over a bowling ball in the middle of the roadway. The ball became lodged underneath the car, prompting them to pull over. The man, 25, crawled below the vehicle to remove the ball. But as he lay under the car, an unknown suspect approached the woman and reached for her purse, police said.
The purse was sitting in the seat next to the woman. As she struggled to pull the purse from the suspect, she pressed her foot on the gas pedal.
That’s when she heard a yell from under the car, which had rolled over her husband. She stopped the vehicle and put her car in reverse, rolling over her husband a second time, police said.
As he yelled out, the suspect who had tried to steal the woman’s bag ran away empty handed.
The injured man was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but he is now in stable condition. His name has not been released.
