The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a 63-year-old male inmate died Friday shortly after being taken to the Jackson County Detention Center.

Jackson County Sheriff Darryl Forte said on Twitter that the inmate was transferred to the jail from the Missouri Department of Corrections and entered the facility around noon. The inmate was taken to a hospital shortly after arriving and died several hours later, the sheriff said.

The inmate’s identity is being withheld by authorities until next of kin is notified, Forte said.

The sheriff said the inmate’s cause of death would be determined by the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office.
