Five Raytown Middle School students taken to hospital after eating marijuana edibles

Ten students at Raytown Middle School were treated Thursday after they apparently ate marijuana-infused foods, and five were taken by ambulance to an area hospital, a district official said.
The students were first evaluated by school nurses after they reported to staff that they were feeling sick, Danielle Nixon, a spokeswoman for the school district, said in a statement. Kansas City emergency paramedics were then called to help treat the students, Nixon said.
All of the students are being monitored, Nixon said, and are in good medical condition.
In the statement, Nixon said the district “prides itself on being a safe place of learning,” saying illegal drugs, tobacco and alcohol are not allowed on school grounds.
“We maintain school safety through the use of school surveillance systems, additional school radios, and surveillance equipment on all school buses. Additionally, the District offers a student assistance program that focuses on prevention, early intervention, referral, and supporting those in need,” Nixon said.
The district has opened an investigation. It is following school board policy with regard to student discipline and cooperation with local law enforcement, Nixon said.
