Major interstate in southern part of Kansas City metro will close this weekend

Crews will close both northbound and southbound Interstate 49 in Grandview this weekend for demolition of a ramp bridge in the area, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.

The closure will begin at 9 p.m. Friday and continue through the weekend with the highway reopening by 5 a.m. Monday, according to Lairyn McGregor, a spokesperson for MoDOT’s Kansas City District. The transportation department is assisting Grandview with the closure.

During the closure, crews will demolish the turnaround ramp and bridge that allows southbound traffic to return to northbound I-49. All I-49 traffic will be routed around the closure via the ramps to and from Main Street. Eastbound and westbound Main Street over I-49 also will be closed.

Drivers will need to follow the signed detour or use alternate routes. All work is weather permitting.

The work is part of Grandview’s I-49 Outer Road Conversion Project, a $15 million economic development project that will convert the outer roads along I-49 to two-way traffic. The project is an attempt to make future development along I-49 more appealing.

Grandview has partnered with MoDOT which is the first time any outer roads have been converted back to two-way traffic, according to a story in the May/June issue of Missouri Municipal Review.
