A nationwide dragnet sweeping up people accused of Medicaid and Medicare fraud brought criminal charges this week against 243 people, including doctors and nurses, involved in some $712 million in false billings.

The investigations targeted abuse of prescription drugs, false billings on medical equipment and personal care providers accused of bilking clients in what U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch called “the largest criminal health care fraud takedown in the history of the Department of Justice.”

Investigations will continue, including in Missouri and Kansas, particularly into “rampant” abuse of personal care services, said Gerald Roy, the special agent in charge of the Kansas City region for the Office of the Inspector General.

“Our programs in Kansas and Missouri are meant for a vulnerable population,” Roy said, “and we are going to protect them.”
