High water prompted calls for help; flash flood warning until 7:30 a.m.
Emergency crews are responding to calls for water rescues and arcing power lines in the wake of Wednesday evening’s storms.
The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory until 4 a.m. for parts of Leavenworth, Wyandotte and Johnson counties in Kansas and parts of Platte, Clay and Jackson counties in Missouri.
Clay, Ray and northern Jackson counties are under a flash flood warning until 7:30 a.m.
The whole region remains under a severe thunderstorm watch until 2 a.m.
There were reports shortly after 10 p.m. of people stranded in their cars in high water at Topping and Deramus avenues in the East Bottoms, at Independence and Topping avenues, at Truman Road and Indiana Avenue and at other locations. Low-lying areas, such as Ninth Street and Hardesty Avenue, were impassable.
There was also a report of a utility pole on fire and power lines arcing at Northwest Cookingham Drive and North Jefferson Street. Transformers were reportedly on fire in other areas.
An accident about 9:30 p.m. closed westbound Interstate 670 at Interstate 70. Another accident closed northbound U.S. 169 at Richards Road.
