Patrick Mahomes’ foundation teams up with Kansas City for new playground at this park
Kansas City kids will soon have a new place to play, thanks to Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ foundation.
The Parks and Recreation Department and the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation partnered to build a playground at Martin Luther King Jr. Square Park, they announced Wednesday.
The foundation approached the parks department with the idea. Starting next week, the department will look for vendors to build the “innovative” play site in the park, near Swope Parkway and Woodland Avenue.
The Super Bowl MVP said the foundation, established last year, is “pumped” to build the project that will honor King.
“We hope that this project brings this community together in a positive and engaging way for years to come,” Mahomes said in a statement.
Mayor Quinton Lucas said he looks forward to the playground.
“I thank and appreciate Patrick for his continued investment in our community, and his commitment to social and racial justice — yet another reason we are so privileged to have him here in Kansas City,” Lucas said in a statement.
A committee of community leaders — including Chris Goode of the KC Parks Board of Commissioners and the Rev. Vernon Howard of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference of Greater Kansas City — will talk to residents about the project and provide feedback.
The project comes as the parks department considers another way of honoring King: renaming a stretch of Blue Parkway, Swope Parkway and Volker Boulevard as Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Parks commissioners are scheduled to meet about the plan on Tuesday.
