Biden and Harris portraits are latest works from Lawrence crop artist Stan Herd

Lawrence crop artist Stan Herd is among the many people excited to learn that Sen. Kamala Harris was Joe Biden’s pick to run as his vice president.

“I’m a political junkie so I follow this stuff real deeply and it always made sense to me that she was the one,” says Herd, who created a Biden portrait earlier this year.

As soon as the news was out, he drove directly to a field on the north side of Lawrence and started sketching. It didn’t take long for him to create the art.

“This is an exceptionally unique project in that it happened with perfect weather. It happened in seven days, but I had been out here three or four days gridding,” said Herd who usually works with a crew of seven or eight people. “Usually these take two weeks.”

Herd, 70, is a well-known artist who has traveled the world to make portraits and other works of art out of natural materials native to the areas where he works.
