Church post says body found in West Memphis Tuesday is missing Overland Park woman
The body of 36-year-old Marilane Carter of Overland Park was found along with her SUV in West Memphis, Arkansas, the church where her husband is lead pastor announced Wednesday morning.
“It is with very heavy hearts that we share that Marilane Carter has passed away,” the Leawood Baptist Church announced in a post on Facebook. “Her vehicle and body were found Tuesday in the West Memphis area. Law enforcement says that foul play is not suspected.”
The church asked its members to keep her husband, Pastor Adam Carter, and their three children in their prayers.
Overland Park police referred questions about the investigation into her death to Crittenden County, Arkansas, Sheriff’s Office.
Chief Deputy Todd Grooms said in a press conference Tuesday that a body was found in a field previously searched. Searchers had seen the storage units, but didn’t look inside because they assumed the units were locked.
According to local reports, the sheriff’s office said it does not suspect foul play. Grooms could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
As of Tuesday night, the sheriff’s office said the body had not been positively identified but was being transported to the coroner.
Marilane Carter was last seen by her family leaving her home around 8:15 p.m. Aug. 1 in a gray 2011 GMC Arcadia. She was headed to Birmingham, Alabama, to visit family and to seek medical help. She, however, never arrived.
After her husband reported her missing on Aug. 3, police were able to recreate her route through Rolla and West Plaines, Missouri, and eventually to West Memphis, Arkansas. But it was there her phone pinged a cell tower for the last time.
