One person killed in crash on lanes to U.S. 69 from eastbound I-435 in Overland Park

One person has died in what witnesses described to police as a “very serious” crash on the lanes exiting to U.S. 69 highway from eastbound Interstate 435 in Overland Park, according to Overland Park police.

The crash occurred shortly before 2 p.m. inside the tunnel near Quivira Road which takes traffic exiting from eastbound I-435 to both northbound and southbound U.S. 69 and College Boulevard.

Overland Park police said the crash had closed access to U.S. 69 from eastbound I-435. Also, eastbound I-435 is restricted to two lanes.

The crash caused traffic to quickly back up beyond Interstate 35 to the west. Traffic was stop and go through the area and drivers were being urged to avoid the area if possible.

Police later identified the person killed in the crash as Simon S. Wilmot, of Olathe.
