Gates Bar-B-Q on Main Street temporarily closed for repairs following fire Sunday
A popular Kansas City barbecue spot suffered minor fire damage, forcing it to temporarily close Sunday, officials said.
Fire fighters were called to the Gates Bar-B-Q in the 3200 block of Main Street on Sunday morning after a grease fire broke out in the restaurant’s indoor pit, said Assistant Fire Chief Jimmy Walker of the Kansas City Fire Department.
No one was injured and the fire did not spread to other parts of the building, Walker said. He didn’t know the exact time the fire was called in.
This type of fire happens frequently at barbecue restaurants, he added.
The health department has been notified of the fire. Health officials will determine how long it will take to clean up the area and make any necessary repairs and the restaurant will reopen once it passes a health department inspection, Walker said.
When reached by phone Sunday, a Gates Bar-B-Q employee said the Main Street location was expected to reopen by Tuesday.
This isn’t the first time a pit fire has damaged a Gates Bar-B-Q establishment.
In February 2015, a worker accidentally ignited a fire at the Gates Bar-B-Q in Independence while cleaning the fire pit.
