Traffic delays expected this weekend along I-435 on Kansas City’s east side
Travelers headed north on Interstate 435 on Kansas City’s east side should expect significant delays Saturday morning as they pass through a bridge rehabilitation project in that area, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.
Crews will close the two left lanes of northbound I-435 between Front Street and Missouri 210 from 4:30 a.m. to noon Saturday for concrete work, said Markl Johnson, a spokesman for MoDOT’s Kansas City District.
During the closure, northbound traffic will be limited to one lane in that direction, Johnson said.
“Road closures in this area has the potential for creating significant traffic slowdowns,” according to a release about the closure. “We encourage motorists to plan ahead.”
The work is part of a two-year $32 million rehabilitation project to repair the bridge that carries I-435 over the Missouri River just south of Worlds of Fun. Crews will be replacing the bridge deck, reinforcing the structural steel and repairing the substructure of the aging bridge that was built in 1972.
Crews will also make repairs necessitate by the erosion of soil around the bridge’s piers in the river.
About 81,500 vehicles use the I-435 bridge each day. Many are tractor-trailers, because of the industrial area near the I-435 and Missouri 210 interchange, according to the transportation department.
The project is expected to be completed by December 2021.
