Ramp from southbound I-435 to I-70 in new interchange in Kansas City to open Tuesday

A ramp that makes up part of the new “partial turbine” interchange near the Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City will open early Tuesday, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.

The new ramp from southbound Interstate 435 to eastbound Interstate 70 is expected to open after crews complete overnight pavement marking work, according to Lairyn McGregor, a spokeswoman for the MoDOT’s Kansas City District.

To prepare for the ramp’s opening, crews will close the ramp from southbound I-435 to westbound I-70 and U.S. 40 from 8 p.m. Monday until 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Once the work is completed, the new ramp from southbound I-435 to both eastbound and westbound I-70 will open. At that point southbound I-435 traffic headed to either direction of I-70 will exit to the right. Westbound traffic will continue straight onto westbound I-70 while eastbound traffic will loop around the partial turbine design onto eastbound I-70.

Drivers will also be able to exit from eastbound I-70 to the Blue Ridge Cutoff.

The ramp is the second one to open in the redesigned interchange. Late last month, the ramp from northbound I-435 to both directions of I-70 reopened.

The ramps are part of two-year, $47 million construction project to makeover the heavily traveled interchange near Arrowhead and Kauffman stadiums. The new design replaces the less traditional left-hand exit ramps, which is expected to make the interchange safer and less congested.

The project, which began in spring 2019 is expected to be mostly completed this fall. Drivers will continue to see lane closures in the area through December. This is the first partial turbine interchange in the Kansas City area.

The transportation department also announced some lane closings in the area this week.

A lane of eastbound I-70 will close at I-435 from 7 p.m. Tuesday to 3 p.m. Wednesday for bridge construction.

A lane of eastbound I-70 will also close at I-435 from 7 p.m. Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday and again 7 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday for bridge construction.
